Red Fox

Curtain finally lifted on new restaurant under construction in Waynesville

The long speculation about what’s been happening at the old Captain’s Bay restaurant site on Russ Avenue in Waynesville is over.

The Red Fox, an American-style mountain tavern, will be brought to Haywood by the same management and ownership of the popular Boojum Brewing. But this isn’t going to be a Boojum-branded restaurant.

The Red Fox will be unique, with a “retro” National Park feeling, painted in camping greens and tans, complete with a welcoming fire in a huge, stacked stone fireplace and a 12-foot stone hearth. The décor will have the feeling of 1960s National Park posters — anchored by a 32-foot oak bar, serving great beer, wine, craft cocktails, cider and non-alcoholic drinks.

The theme is meant to be “vintage outdoors,” said co-owner Kelsie Baker.

Owners are the Baker family, of Waynesville, who also founded Boojum Brewing in 2015. Originally from Key Largo, Florida, siblings Kelsie and Ben and parents Corrine and Woody found their way to the mountains, settling in Haywood County.
